Media & File Issues

Troubleshooting steps for issues uploading files and embedding media.

The LMS platform accepts a wide variety of file types to allow you to work flexibly and share freely with the class. There are some common issues that can be avoided when uploading, embedding, and sharing different file types in the LMS. In this topic, we will provide some best practices for file names and some troubleshooting tips for working with files.

File Names

When naming files, be careful not to add uncommon symbols or use extremely long file names. An example of a good name is LastNameFirstName_NameOfAssignment.pdf. An example of a poor file name is (LastName){FirstName}_'NameOfAssignment'.pdf. Using these special characters may interfere with uploading and also cause others to not be able to view the content.

File Type

A common problem with uploading or submitting files is that the file type is not approved to be used in the LMS. A list of approved file types is available in Accepted File Types. If the file type you are using is unrecognized, you will see the warning above.

Avoiding file type issues:

  • Check to make sure the file is an approved type.
  • Save or export the file as an approved type.
  • Upload the file to a cloud platform and submit a link instead.
  • Try compressing, or zipping, your file.

File Size

If you are having trouble uploading a file to an assignment, discussion, or feedback, it may be too large. Each individual file you upload must be 4GB or smaller. If you attempt to exceed this limit, you will see the banner above and will not be able to upload.

Avoiding file upload issues:

  • Break the file into a couple of smaller files.
  • Upload the file to a cloud platform and provide a link ****to the file in the LMS.
  • Try compressing your file.

Compressing Files

There are several reasons why you may want to compress your file before uploading. For example, your file may be slightly over the file size limit, you may need to submit a project folder, or you may need to upload a file type the LMS won't accept.

How to compress and uncompress files:

File Embeds

The LMS provides various ways to display media in line with the content. Learn about how to embed media in the Adding Media topic. If you are having a problem with an embed displaying or are seeing an error on the embed window, there are a few things you can try.

Resolving embed issues:

  • If the embed is not displaying as expected, check to make sure the iframe code is complete.
  • Remove any extra HTML or script code from the iframe.
  • Check that the file type is accepted.
  • Verify that the item has the correct share settings to allow people to view it.

Some media providers may require the viewer to log in before viewing content, including Microsoft Stream. We encourage you to note this above or below the item so that viewers know what steps to take.
